Melanotan-2 (MT-2) is an unapproved synthetic peptide designed to mimic some of the biological effects of alpha-melanocyte-stimulating hormone (α-MSH). It has attracted attention because of its effects on skin pigmentation, appetite, and sexual function. It is sometimes referred to online as the “Barbie drug” because of its association with rapid skin tanning.
MT-2 is not approved for human use by the FDA or other major regulatory agencies, and products marketed online are generally sold outside conventional pharmaceutical regulatory systems.

This pharmacology contributed to the development of related melanocortin compounds, including bremelanotide, which has a specific approved medical indication.
- Appetite — MC4: Activation of central melanocortin receptors can influence appetite and energy balance and may reduce food intake in experimental settings.
- Multiple Receptor Effects: Because MT-2 is not highly selective for a single melanocortin receptor, its biological effects can extend beyond pigmentation.
Skin Pigmentation and Tanning
The most recognizable effect associated with MT-2 is increased pigmentation.
By activating melanocortin signaling, MT-2 can stimulate melanocytes to produce more eumelanin. This can result in darker skin pigmentation and the appearance of a tan.
Importantly, increased pigmentation should not be interpreted as equivalent to sunscreen protection. A darker skin tone produced by melanocortin stimulation does not provide reliable protection against ultraviolet radiation, and MT-2 should not be considered a substitute for sunscreen or UV-protective measures.
Sexual Effects
MT-2 has also been investigated for effects on sexual function. Activation of central melanocortin receptors, particularly MC4-related pathways, can influence sexual arousal and erectile physiology.
This pharmacological activity is distinct from its pigmentation effects. The related compound bremelanotide was developed to target melanocortin pathways for a specific medical application, but this does not mean that MT-2 itself is an approved treatment.
